The Hajj is a yearly Islamic journey to Mecca, and a required religious obligation for Muslims that must be completed at any rate once in their lifetime by all grown-up Muslims who are physically and monetarily equipped for undertaking the journey, and can provide support to their family amid their absence. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, including Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, and Sawm. The social gathering during Hajj is viewed as the biggest yearly assembling of individuals in the world. The condition of being physically and fiscally equipped for performing the Hajj is called istita’ah, and a Muslim who satisfies this condition is known as a mustati. The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim individuals, and their accommodation to Allah. The word Hajj signifies “to intend a journey”, which implies both the outward demonstration of a journey and the internal demonstration of one’s intentions.
The journey happens from the 8th to 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calender. Since the Islamic schedule is lunar and the Islamic year is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year, the Gregorian date of Hajj changes from year to year. Ihram is the name given to the unique profound state in which piligrims wear two white sheets of consistent material and abstain from specific things.
